With "the number one bluesman"
MAGIC SLIM & the Teardrops and the Fabulous DAVID ROTUNDO BAND

FRIDAY OCTOBER 2, 2009
The Palais Royale - Doors at 6pm, Dinner at 7pm Show at 8:30pm

TORONTO – The Palais Royale and Mory the Sockman are teaming up to present "A Magical Evening of Rockin’ Blues" with Magic Slim & the Teardrops. Opening for Magic Slim is Toronto blues harpist David Rotundo who always delivers!

Magic Slim & The Teardrops are known as "the number one Blues Band in the world today" with an intense, electrified Mississippi-to-Chicago blues style that has influenced countless modern rockin’ blues artists. As Blues Revue wrote, "Whoever the house band in blues heaven may be, even money says they're wearing out Magic Slim albums trying to get that Teardrops sound down cold."

Magic’s recording career began in the 1966 with the song "Scufflin'" followed by a number of singles in the mid 1970s. He recorded his first album in 1977, Born Under A Bad Sign for the French MCM label. During the 1980s Slim released titles on Alligator, Rooster Blues and Wolf Records and won his first W. C. Handy Award. In 1980 he recorded his cover version of Mustang Sally. In 1982 guitarist John Primer--who now is a star in his own right-- joined the Teardrops and played for Magic for 13 years. Subsequent releases included Spider in My Stew on Wolf Records and the post-Primer line-up features guitarist-singer, Jake Dawson.

In 1994 Magic moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where the Zoo Bar had been booking him for years. In 2003 Magic Slim and the Teardrops won the W. C. Handy Award as "Blues Band Of The Year". The excitement of a live performance was captured on CD and DVD entitled Anything Can Happen in August 2005. They are constantly touring and playing as headliner at festivals and venues world-wide.

Magic's electrifying live performances are legendary. Standing 6 and a half feet tall, Magic cuts a commanding figure on stage, prowling the boards in his large cowboy hat while filling the room with his slash-and-burn guitar and booming vocals. Slim’s verbal asides are crucial to his charisma, especially when he his slips into his Howlin' Wolf-like voice. Armed with an encyclopaedic repertoire of hundreds of blues songs, the masterful Magic Slim is in total command---and gives each show a dazzling impromptu vibe.

Joining Magic will be Toronto blues harpist David Rotundo, who always delivers the goods! He bought his first harmonica after seeing James Cotton perform at the El Mocambo in 1991 and "He blew one note on the harmonica that hypnotized me and I've been playing the blues ever since." This passion for Blues music has taken David throughout the United States, spending time in many of the Blues' legendary locales--New Orleans, Clarksdale, Austin, Memphis and Chicago -- with little more than his wits and a bag full of harmonicas to get by. "I wanted to hear and experience the real thing," he explains. David Rotundo’s awards & nominations include the prestigious CBC/GALAXIE RISING STAR award and multiple MapleBlues Harmonica Player of Year nominations.
